On the next episode of Tellywonk: I watch Lost

And when I say “I watch Lost” I do mean: all of it. From the L to the T and everything inbetween, making sure to pay attention to the roundness of the hole in the middle of the ‘O’ and the mysterious curves of the ‘S’.

The thing is this – many many years ago (around five) back when Lost began, I began with it, dutifully tuning in each week to watch what I was promised would be a groundbreaking, gamechanging, mindblowing new series. I was sucked in by the mystery, intrigued by the magic … and then thoroughly pissed off when I discovered that I wasn’t going to get any answers by the end of season one. Oh no no no no no! If I wanted answers, that was going to take years.

So at that point I made a vow. I was leaving Lost, and returning when (and only when) I was assured answers. When the end was in sight, and the final season was beginning, then and only then, I would return. I feel as confident now as then that on hearing this JJ Abrams shook UNCONTROLLABLY in his babycalfskin loafers (donated by the baby calf, he wouldn’t be cruel) – or would have done, if I’d bothered saying it out loud with anyone with earshot.

Nevertheless, that time has come (what’s that I hear? Is it a well dressed TV creative in a far off land cheering? Well, you’re WELCOME, JJ – or if I may, J) and the new – final – season of Lost starts next week here in the US. On the 2nd of February. Of course, this does rather mean I haven’t left myself much time.

So here’s the plan: I’m going to be catching up with the entire first five seasons of Lost over the next week: there are 101 episodes available on Hulu1, which works out at about 73-74 hours of television, which is completely manageable, if slightly muscle-wastey.

Starting tomorrow morning, I’m going to be catching up on Lost, and, because I am me, I’m going to be doing it with my laptop open, typing more or less often depending on how exciting it is. And possibly drawing little pictures in photoshop to go with it.

I don’t expect anyone to do this with me, or even to read it, particularly – it’s just my little way of celebrating the birth of and christening my new TV blog. You know, by writing something I’m not expecting people to join in or even read.
Wow, I did not think that through.

Anyway, this is where I am, and this, for no other reason other than I promised myself, I promised JJ (or “J”) even though he doesn’t know it. And it’s my idea of fun, because I am a sick little puppy like that.
And that is the way that sick little puppies roll. 2

1 Annoyingly, however, Wikipedia says there are 103 episodes of Lost, so… we’ve already LOST two. Gettit? “Lost”? Anyway: that could be turn out to be interesting.
2 Tellywonk does not endorse the rolling of puppies. Especially not sick ones.

  1. Best of luck and enjoy the sensory overload of that much mystery, time travel and smoke monsters. I made much the same decsiion – without the blogging bit of it – two months ago. I’ve so far managed to get from the start of season 3 to halfway through season five, watching episodes downloaded en masse to my iPhone for about an hour a day, give or take.

I’m almost sad at watching it so quickly as it means that the entire story will be told by the end of the final season this year. While other, more sensible people have had the pleasure of the island for a few years, I’ve compressed that pleasure into just a few months.

Let Desmond be your constant. (You’ll see what that means in season 4, by the way.)

  2. Well I, for one, am excited.

  3. Hello Miss T! I am excited too! I do not know if I can be doing with this VERY BIG WRITING, though, I feel like the special section at the library.

And Hello Mark. Yes, well I *kind* of meant to leave it so long, because of having the attention span of a toddler-gnat and very impatient to boot, but didn’t mean to leave it *quite* this late. Still: onward and Lostward. Desmond eh? Will bear that in mind…

And welcome to you both, especially you, Mark, who gets a prize for being the first real commenter.

  4. I resent that.

    But not very much.

    Is that better?

  6. Oh btw. I hope you know how much YOUR KIND are shunned and pitied by those of us who kept through it all the way through. Despite the beyond-frustrating dark days of Season 2 and the utter, utter shit episode in Season 3.

You will never know the hours of theorising! The waking up in the night wondering if that stupid tree-frog is somehow the key to it all! And mainly, the talking reams and reams of nonsense on the internets! Which is the primary part of the “Lost Experience” (I don’t count the ARG and the other cheap frivolities).

  12. I’m sure this has already been pointed out to you but seeing that you’re on track to finish season 5 just after season 6 begins, how are you going to deal with the withdrawl of having to wait to be served 1 episode a week for the next 15 weeks? The rest (or majority) of us have got used to this over the last 5 years but I think you’re setting yourself up for a fall. Is it going to be the worst case of cold-lost-turkey since I found the remains of 2005’s Christmas dinner when I got round to cleaning my fridge the following July? Or are you looking forward to getting away from the Lostinsons?
